Happiest Birthday Boy

September 7, 2010

Over the summer, I had the honor of mentoring this fabulous photographer (and she’s gorgeous too I might add!) and so I must say, it is a lot of fun photographing kids who are used to a camera! This little guy was so happy, and my camera loves him, as does his mommy’s. I know all too well what it is like to be behind the pictures and not in them so I made sure to capture lots of mom and her birthday boy so that he can forever see just how much his mommy loves him.

Another great thing about sessions with people who know photography is that they know what to bring… check out this piano!! One of my new favorite images ever:

…tied with this one… how am I supposed to pick between the two?

Summertime at the Orchard is just magical. I haven’t shot there in months so going back was like falling in love all over again. I just love it there and hands down, it is my favorite location to photograph in (did I mention that my husband’s family members own it and take the utmost care of it?). It is a special place. I know how to find the light there and that’s the beauty of photographing somewhere that you are familiar with.

I always try to start out getting the “perfect photo where everyone is looking” so that relatives don’t ask, “did any of them turn out? you know, where you’re all looking at the camera?” Sometimes I get it on the first take, sometimes I don’t. This was my first click.

And all you have to do to get natural \, happy expressions out of parents is to tell them to look at their child. Really, it is that simple.

I know this sounds boastful but I can’t help it… I am not going to lie, I think I’m pretty good at photographing families…. because I photograph fun and love, not the stiff poses from yesteryears! You KNOW you had one hanging on your walls! There is nothing more satisfying for me to hear a mom say, “I am worried my kids (and my husband) are not going to cooperate” and then to end up with beautiful images like these. I have thought long and hard about what kind of photographer I want to be… I don’t mean the types of subjects I photograph, but what direction I want to keep going in, my brand and my style. I saw this quote a while back and I promised myself that I would always shoot from my heart and that I would photograph fun. I don’t really care so much about an extensive array of props that mean nothing, stylized sessions that aren’t a reflection of a child’s personality, I want my clients to look back on my photographs and think, “I loved that period of my life and I love my family.” That’s all that really matters to me anymore.

So there, and here you go…. shot from my heart.

If you count the m&ms here, you’ll be able to see how old the boys are!

I’ve known this beautiful mom since the 1st grade…. she is by far, one of the best moms I know. She has two sets of twins and a special little girl all under the age of 5. And did I mention she’s my age. She’s my hero and she is doing this fantastic job that God put her here to do: raising these beautiful children. They just moved back to this beautiful state and so I met them in their new hometown of Annapolis for this session by the water.

Just a few here… I posted a ton on my Facebook fan page so head over there for some more! And on that note, lots of changes are coming around here soon. I’ll be relying on my blog for sneak peeks instead of posting directly to Facebook as well(mostly due to some copyright violations–ya can’t print photos you didn’t pay for! :) and I’m also working on a whole new website/rebrand/logo/and a whole new look. Keeping things fresh is good and staying ontop of the game is important to me!

Birthday Princess

August 22, 2010

This is my 3rd time photographing this beautiful family this year and I’m so honored to be able to do 1st birthday photos for this little princess. This mom is always so styling with her outfit choices! Love the bold summer colors. And if ever there was an award for best big brother, I would surely submit this big brother for it. He is so polite everytime and always so cooperative for me. Thank you so much again W family… it is truly a pleasure working with you and watching your children grow!

Happiness

July 29, 2010

This session was rescheduled from the extremely crazy heat a couple of weeks ago and I’m so glad we waited, because althought its still toasty outside, it was great weather for photographs. Little misses just turned the big ONE year old and wow, does she love her big brother. I had a great time going back through these and watching her face as she watched him. I love it.

Down on the Farm

June 21, 2010

I met up with the R family at their relative’s farm in Frederick County on a very hot morning… kudos to them for not complaining once! It was so hot and humid and I am pretty sure I smelled like a locker room by the end (sorry, just keepin’ it real here) but that didn’t stop us from having a good time. This was my first time, I believe, incorporating some farm animals into a session and I loved it! So, if you’re reading this and have access to a farm, please keep it in mind for some truly unique photographs.

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing quite a few families lately and it really is such a fun time for me. My family sessions last 2 hours and during that time, I like to think it’s all play and little work! :) I first photographed the E family this past winter when they welcomed baby #3 and they invited me back to their home for a family session as they are now a family of 5, or 7 if you count the two dogs! They have this gorgeous property right in their very back yard!

Summer Family Fun

May 30, 2010

Happy unofficial start of summer! I scheduled this session weeks ago and I believe we had two rain postponements and a reschedule so when I was finally able to photograph them, how appropriate that I kick off the summer season with this gorgeous family! I love mom’s choices in clothes, they definitely had the All-American vibe going on so I totally went with it. We met at the Gettysburg battlefields which has so many beautiful choices for backdrops and has a special meaning this Memorial Day weekend.

Summer, picnics, watermelon, red barn = definitely All-American!

I love this white picket fence, blossoms on the ground and the vibrant blue outfits here. This little area might just be one of my new favorite spots to photograph in because of the awesome light shining through the trees.

For this shot, I wanted to photograph mom and dad together but the kids jumped in on each shot here and posed themselves just like this for each!!! Love it when photographs are truly the real deal!

We ended the session with lollipops and big brother did a “cheers” with hers, and hers broke…. so he gave her his, not before he had one last lick. Isn’t that so sweet?

Happy Day

May 26, 2010

This beautiful evening I was at the beautiful Catoctin Mountain Orchardwith these beautiful people. Their oldest daughter is having a birthday tomorrow and they’ve never had professional photos done before (much to celebrate)!

Perfect.

If you arrive with rain boots to wear when it’s not even raining, I just might do a cartwheel.

Mom brought this basket from her house (she came very prepared!)…. I love it!

I’m kinda in love with these shots.

And if you have 3 beautiful girls in your family, I can pretty much guarantee that I’ll want to have a tea party.

Truly daddy’s little princesses.

If you’re a parent of a toddler, you can relate to peace and quiet followed by them interrupting and running circles around you!

Happy (almost summer!)

Life is Good.

May 25, 2010

So I read recently from another photographer that “If you train your eyes to see love, the rest will fall into place”. So that’s what I’ve been trying to do.

This is my second session with this little baby, you might recall I dubbed his newborn session Miracle Baby for a good reason. He is so very happy to be here and life is good for the K family as they celebrate his 1/2 year birthday!
